Dogs

Openly does not use a restricted breed list. We believe a dog’s behavior matters more than its breed. You can confidently write policies for any dog breed, provided they meet our safety standards.

  • No Exclusions: We do not offer dog-specific exclusions based on breed or size
  • Eligibility: If a dog, regardless of size or breed, has ever bitten or attacked a person, the home does not qualify for coverage

Portal Entry: You must disclose any and all dogs that reside at the property being insured. This includes dogs owned by the policyholder or any tenants.

  1. Within the Agent Portal, you will be asked if there are any dogs under the Property Review tab.
    • Answer Yes if the policyholder allows tenants to have dogs
    • Answer Yes if any dogs reside at the insured location
      1. If yes to the first dog question, then two additional questions will need to be answered:
        • Any dogs over 25 pounds?
          • Answer Yes if the dog is expected to reach over 25 lbs
        • Has any of the dogs ever bitten or attacked a person?

Livestock & Other Animals

We provide liability coverage (Coverage E) for various domesticated animals, provided that they are kept for private use only. These animals are not covered under any other part of the policy.

Animals eligible for liability coverage include:

  • Horses, cows, and alpacas
  • Goats, sheep, and chickens
  • Other common domesticated animals

Exotic Animals & Exclusions

Openly generally excludes coverage for exotic animals. These animals are excluded from liability for bodily injury or property damage.

Exotic Animal Defintion:

  • Animals that are wild by nature or not usually domesticated
  • Illegal animals or non-human primates
  • Venomous or poisonous creatures and birds of prey

State Exceptions (NH & VA):

In New Hampshire and Virginia, an insured may own an exotic pet and still qualify for an Openly policy. However, you must:

  1. Mark Yes to the exotic animal question on the Property Review tab.

  2. Submit a signed exclusion form to our Customer Experience Team.
