A hurricane deductible is a specialized, separate out-of-pocket expense that applies strictly to property damage caused by an officially recognized hurricane. Unlike a standard homeowner's deductible—which covers everyday risks like fire, water leaks, or theft—this deductible is triggered only during severe, named storm events. It is designed to help manage the significantly higher risk and financial exposure associated with coastal storms.
The hurricane deductible is displayed on the Coverage tab within the portal whenever a property address indicates that the risk is susceptible to hurricane losses.
- Policy Format: The deductible is applied as a flat, stated dollar amount listed directly in the policy.
- Coastal Exposures: Specific coastal exposures are required to carry a $500 minimum deductible unless otherwise dictated by state-specific rules.
Activation Period
The hurricane deductible is strictly in effect during the following timeframes:
- Trigger: Begins the moment a hurricane watch or warning is issued or declared for any part of the state by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the National Weather Service.
- Termination: Ends 24 hours following the formal termination of the last hurricane watch or warning for any part of the state.
Wind & Hail Deductibles by State
When assessing baseline deductibles or quoting policies, refer to the table below. Deductible amounts are split dynamically based on a replacement cost estimate (RCE) threshold of $1,000,000.
For states listed with matching lower and higher values (e.g., PA, SC, VA, MA, ME, NJ, NM, and AL Renewals), the deductible remains flat at $500 regardless of whether the RCE is above or below the $1,000,000 split line.
| State(s) | Lower RCE Deductible (< $1M) | Higher RCE Deductible (≥ $1M) |
|---|---|---|
| AL (New Business) | $5,000 | $15,000 |
