The wind / hail deductible is the specific out-of-pocket amount a policyholder is responsible for paying when a covered loss is caused by wind or hail forces (such as a severe thunderstorm, tornado, or hailstorm). The deductible amount is subtracted from the claims settlement when a claim is covered and paid. Agents can view, select, and adjust the wind / hail deductible options within the Coverage tab of the Agent Portal during the quoting process or when modifying an existing policy.
Key Considerations
- Separate From All-Perils: The wind / hail deductible operates independently from the standard All-Perils deductible. It only applies if wind or hail is determined to be the proximate cause of the damage.
- Hurricane Deductibles: Coastal states like Delaware and Virginia have separate, specialized deductibles for hurricane-impacted regions. Learn more about Hurricane Deductibles.
- Deductible Types: Depending on the state and selection, this deductible may be structured as a flat dollar amount (example: $1,000, $2,500) or a percentage of the home’s total dwelling coverage (example: 1%, 2%, or 5%).
Wind & Hail Deductibles by State
When assessing baseline deductibles or quoting policies, refer to the table below. Deductible amounts are split dynamically based on a Replacement Cost Estimate (RCE) threshold of $1,000,000.
For states listed with matching lower and higher values (example: PA, SC, VA, MA, ME, NJ, NM, and AL renewals), the deductible remains flat at $500 regardless of whether the RCE is above or below the $1,000,000 split line.
| State(s) | Lower RCE Deductible (< $1M) | Higher RCE Deductible (≥ $1M) |
|---|---|---|
| AL (New Business) | $5,000 | $15,000 |
| AL (Renewal Business) | $500 | $500 |

Declining the Wind / Hail Deductible
In several territories, a separate wind / hail deductible is optional rather than mandatory.
- How It Works: If you choose to Decline the separate wind / hail deductible in the Agent Portal, any covered damage caused by a wind or hail event will instead be subject to the policy's standard All Other Perils (AOP) Deductible.
- Where Allowed: The option to decline a separate wind / hail deductible is generally restricted to lower-risk states such as AZ, CT, DE, MA, ME, NH, NM, OR, PA, SC, UT, and VA.
- Mandatory States: In high-risk severe convective storm zones such as AL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MO, MS, OH, OK, TN, and WI, a separate wind / hail deductible is mandatory and cannot be declined, though the threshold amount may be adjusted.
