Liability Coverage (Coverage E)

Liability coverage, known as Coverage E, protects policyholders (along with additional insureds and other household members) if a lawsuit or claim is filed against them alleging bodily harm or property damage to another person.

Depending on where the policy is in its lifecycle, liability coverage details can be found in two different locations within the portal:

  • During the Quoting Process: Coverage tab

  • For Active/Issued Policies: Policy tab

Coverage

Coverage E applies to claims or lawsuits filed against the named insured, additional insureds, and other household members for bodily injury and property damage. Coverage limits range from $100,000 to $1 million.

Personal Injury

While traditional policies only cover basic bodily injury and property damage, Openly automatically expands its personal liability coverage to include Personal Injury. This protects the insured against non-physical damages, including:

  • False arrest, detention, or imprisonment
  • Malicious prosecution
  • Wrongful eviction, wrongful entry, or invasion of private occupancy (of a room, dwelling)
  • Libel and slander (oral or written publication of defamatory material)
  • Violations of another person's right to privacy

Temporary Residences and Student Housing

Openly policies automatically extend liability coverage to any part of a residence not owned by the insured where an insured person is temporarily residing.

This extension includes student housing for full-time students (as defined by their school) who were residents of the household before moving out, provided the student meets one of the following criteria:

  • Under the age of 24 and a relative of the insured.
  • Age 21 or under and in policyholders' care (or in the care of a resident relative).

The policy does not allow endorsements to add a specific address for a temporary residence or student housing. This coverage is inherently built into the policy.

Vacant Land

Openly policies automatically extend liability coverage to other separate plots of land owned by the policyholder, subject to the following conditions:

  • Must Be Vacant: The land must be entirely vacant, meaning there are absolutely no structures present.
  • No Endorsement Required: The policy cannot be endorsed to add a specific address for the vacant land. This is because coverage is already built into the policy for all separate vacant land owned by the Insured.
