Motorized Vehicles and Equipment

Openly policies provide coverage for various motorized vehicles and equipment, but there are clear boundaries regarding what is protected and where. Below is a breakdown of how policy coverage applies to various motorized vehicles.

Note: Loss Payees cannot be added to an Openly policy for any motorized vehicle. Additionally, coverage automatically ends the moment a motorized vehicle leaves the property, except for the specific golf cart exemptions outlined below.

Liability vs. Physical Damage Coverage

Understanding the difference between liability and physical damage is crucial for vehicle owners. Here is how coverage splits across these categories:

Coverage Type What's Covered Financial Limits & Deductibles Key Restrictions / Exclusions
Physical Damage (Coverage C) Damage to the vehicle itself. Max coverage of $7,500 after a $500 deductible. Strictly excludes damage from collisions or rollovers.
Liability (Coverage E) Bodily injury or property damage caused to others. Up to your policy's standard liability limit. Only active within specific legal boundaries (see below).

Golf Carts

Golf carts cannot be scheduled or blanketed. To qualify for coverage under a policy, the golf cart must meet two design criteria:

  • It must be designed to carry no more than four people.
  • It cannot be manufactured or modified to exceed speeds of 25 mph on level ground.

Permitted Legal Boundaries for Golf Cart Coverage

For liability coverage to apply during an incident, the golf cart must be operating within one of these specific zones:

  • Golfing Facilities: Parked, stored, or actively used for golfing, recreation, or leisure activities permitted by the facility.
  • Transit: Traveling directly to or from a designated motor vehicle or golf cart parking / storage area.
  • Crossings: Crossing public roads at designated access points connecting sections of a golfing facility.
  • Private Residential Communities: Within a private residential community containing the insured’s primary residence, provided the roads are subject to HOA authority and golf carts can legally travel on them.

Other Motorized Vehicles

Tractors, ATVs, UTVs, Dirt Bikes, Gators, Lawnmowers & Snowmobiles

These vehicles cannot be scheduled or blanketed under a policy. A personal tractor, Gator, lawnmower, snowmobile, ATV, UTV, or dirt bike is covered under Coverage C (Personal Property) and Coverage E (Liability) only if they meet the following benchmarks:

  • No Registration Required: The vehicle is not legally required to be registered for public road use.
  • Land Service & On-Property Use: Maintenance equipment, such as tractors and lawn mowers, must be used to service the insured land. For recreational items such as ATVs, snowmobiles, and dirt bikes, coverage is strictly limited to incidents that occur on the property. Once a dirt bike or ATV hits an off-site track or public trail, coverage stops.

E-Bikes

Unlike other motorized options, e-bikes can be scheduled on an Openly policy. E-bikes and their attached accessories receive Coverage C (Personal Property) and Coverage E (Liability) protection as long as they meet these definitions:

  • It relies on an electrical assist system.
  • It is not entirely self-propelled (meaning it requires rider pedaling/assistance to operate).

We will accept a receipt in place for an appraisal of an e-bike for scheduling purposes. For more information on scheduling e-bikes, refer to the article about scheduled items.
